The process of crude red palm oil to RBD palm oil contains four steps: degumming, deacidification, bleaching and deodorization.

Degumming step of refining crude red palm oil:

In degumming step of refining palm oil, it generally adds phosphoric acid to remove the gum out, and needn't add hot water, because the gum content of crude palm oil is very low. The function of phosphoric acid is to convert colloidal substance into water-soluble substance. 

In small palm oil refining machine, the water-soluble substance will absorb other impurities and become larger and larger. At last, these impurities will sink and be discharged out. And in large scale palm oil refinery plant, these impurities will be absorbed by bleaching earth in bleaching process together with pigment.

Deacidification step of refining crude red palm oil:

Deacidification has two methods: chemical and physical. In small palm oil refining machine, it often uses chemical deacidification method. Adding alkali liquor can neutralize the free fatty acid in crude red palm oil, and generate nigre which will also sink and be discharged out. In large scale palm oil refinery plant, it uses distillation method to steam the free fatty acid out.

Bleaching step of refining crude red palm oil:

In bleaching step of refining crude red palm oil, the oil is mixed with bleaching earth  in vacuum condition to absorb impurities and colour pigments in palm oil.

Deodorization step of refining crude red palm oil:

In deodorization step of refining crude red palm oil, the odors of palm oil are removed when the oil is steamed at high temperatures of between 240°C to 260°C in vacuum condition, and then the palm oil will be cooled to room temperature.
